Bright Design’s Newest SEO Team Member
My Name is Zach and I’m the newest member of the SEO Team at Bright Design. I started at Bright Design at the end of January 2018. Before I found Bright Design, I was a Student at the University of Brunel in West London. I was studying Computing and Game design which is something that I am very passionate about. I’ve played games since I can remember, so when it came to leaving school and making a decision as to what to take on in life it seemed to be the obvious option.
After a short time at University, I began to dislike the course. It seemed like it wasn’t what it was made out to be. I became less motivated to work and learn and I could see a downward spiral beginning. I realised that leaving University had to be my next option but I couldn’t just leave. I started to do some job searching and looking at some Apprenticeships local to where I lived. This is where I found Bright Design. I looked on their website to find out what exactly they do. When I began to read about SEO and the things they do it sparked an interest in me. I applied for the apprenticeship they were recruiting for online and I called them up to ask for more information about it. I spoke to Tom who is the Head of SEO, and after talking for a bit he suggested that maybe a full-time job would suit me better. I didn’t really think I’d have had the option to get a full-time job after dropping out of Uni so when Tom told me this I was really excited. I called my mum and told her that I was leaving university and was coming home on the Wednesday, and that I had an interview on the Friday. You can probably imagine how she reacted. I then came for my interview and met the team. I was surprised. It wasn’t at all what I expected. The team were really nice and relaxed. The environment just felt natural and as a person, I can be quite shy when surrounded by other quiet people, however seeing as everyone was chatty and friendly I felt at ease. I came back for a second interview and they offered me the job.
Three months later, I’m headed in for my first day. The first week was an introduction to SEO, and I had to learn the ropes of course. I found what I was learning very interesting, a lot more than I thought I would. I then started doing smaller tasks such as doing the Social Media posts for our clients, which I feel like I picked up pretty quick. Further into the month, I began to get deeper into learning the process of what we do. To be honest, I can’t remember a time where I’ve been so motivated to learn. Even through my whole time at school. It’s still a strange feeling to me because I was so used to getting up to go to school, university or the job I had in my gap year and feeling like it’s a chore and not something I wanted to do. One of the reasons why is because when I was at University for example, I was learning about the history of Computers which led to me to the classic thoughts of “when am I going to use this in later life.” Never is the answer. So now that I’m dealing with clients who I’m helping with their website or social media, I feel like I’m doing something worthwhile. I’m picking up SEO skills and also general business skills. These are the sort of skills I will take with me in life and never lose. So, with this motivation, how comfortable I feel in the workplace with my co-workers, I feel like I’m making good progress. There’s still a long way to go and a lot to learn.
As of now when I’m writing this blog, I have a list of my own clients and I’m starting the main process, my first real steps to becoming a fully functioning member of the Bright Design SEO team.
As for the future? Well, I’m taking things step by step as we go but from how much I’m enjoying being at Bright Design, I don’t have any plans on changing where I’m currently headed, I’ll tell you that for free.
