Keeping up With All the Latest News & Research

Forget Keeping up with the Kardashians, if you want to rank your website, it is important that you keep up-to-date with all the latest SEO and digital marketing news. I understand that this isn’t “hardcore optimisation” but knowledge is power, use your resources to build an understanding around SEO. Be careful, there are a handful of websites out there that don’t always post the most trustworthy information…

Here are a few of my personal favourites (not including Bright Design, of course!);

Search Engine Land


Google My Business

Make it easier for people to find your business with Google My Business, or commonly referred to as a GMB. GMB is a digital representation of your business, think of it as a newspaper ad on the side of a Google SERP. It contains all the necessary information that your customers will need, this includes; phone number, email address, business address, reviews, map, images of the business, and a shortcut to your website. 

I would most definitely recommend spending a good chunk of time setting up you GMB correctly. Use images of good quality and include all necessary information to help potential customers find their way to your website. 


Build Content for Your Readers

It is key to remember when producing content that you’re writing for your readers, not the search engine. Search engines don’t buy your products or services, people do. Produce content that is engaging and something that people actually want to read, ask rhetorical questions or make a few jokes. It’s all up to you, it’s your brand! 


Optimise Your Images

Yes, optimising your images is a real thing. Images are often neglected and it’s time to change that. Image search is on the rise and it has never been so important to make sure your images are prominent in the search results. To ensure your images are optimised you can;

  • Add an alt text to ALL of the images
  • Optimise the image names, use keywords with the text.
  • Place images with thought

Business Listings

Business listings are great for local SEO, you may also know them as citations. They enable a larger audience to locate your business by simply placing a link on a number of websites.  


Monitor Your Website Performance 

What’s the point in implementing all these tricks if you don’t monitor them? There is no point. By monitoring the progress you can identify what works for you and what doesn’t quite work, so you can keep improving your strategies. 

Page speed is an important factor in website performance, the longer the site takes to load, the higher the bounce rate. The optimal page speed is 3 seconds and below. There are many free tools out there to measure your page speed and provide you with some tips on how to improve it. One of my personal favourites is Google’s own tool, PageSpeed Insights. They provide a score for both the desktop and mobile site.
