What is Google My Business and Why You Should Use it?
Setting up your business on a Google My Business listing may seem like a pointless task if you are trying to focus your efforts on your website. You may also think that all the data about your business, from your address to your phone number, is already listed and accessible through your website. And that you do not need to set up a GMB to list this again.
However, Google will automatically set up a GMB for your website if it sees you as an active working business. This listing is created through the use of the basic accessible data that is on your website.
You may be thinking why should you have to know about this if Google is doing all the leg work for you? And do you need to even place more information on this listing? But there is a lot that can be done to optimise this further. And ensure you enhance your presence on Google.
What is Google My Business?
Google My Business is more commonly referred to as a GMB. It is an online business listing produced through Google. These listings hold information about your website from a business category and description, contact information and links for your website.
These listings are constantly being improved with new features, both free and paid, being added to them. Most recently Google has added posts into GMB to allow businesses to place fresh content on their listings.
These listings are very notable amongst search traffic as they are placed at the top right of a SERP (Search Engine Results Page). Having a listing appear here means that it is fully optimised. This is because it allows you to stand out from the other search results and draws the eyes of potential consumers.
Benefits of a GMB
There are numerous ways a GMB listing can benefit you and your business just from being live and optimised. Below are just some of the many reasons:
Enhanced Local SEO
Google My Business listings enhance your local SEO through the linking of your company and website to a location through the information that you put in. This then allows you to target local business search traffic more efficiently and effectively. Targeting this search traffic can be very effective for your business as this traffic tends to be high converting through the use of a GMB.
This can be done by ensuring that your business’s phone number and web address are both prominent and clear on your GMB listing.
Enhanced Consumer Interaction
Managing a GMB listing can easily enhance the interactions that you have with your consumers. This again can be done through the phone extension in Google. Allowing customers to directly get in contact with you at the click of a button. But this is also made possible through reviews.
With reviews on a GMB listing, you are able to read and reply to any of them. Doing this would then also help you to build trust with existing and new users who are possibly checking your reviews to decide whether to use your business.
How do You Set up a GMB Listing?
If you are set on wanting to create a new GMB or optimise an existing one Google has made for you, then following the steps below can help you access and maintain your GMB:
Setting up a New GMB
– To start you will need to visit the web address https://www.google.com/business/. Here you will need to sign in.
– Once you have signed in you will have to follow the process of entering all your business’s data correctly.
– When you land on a location prompt, if you have a physical address you can enter this here. However, if you do not have a physical location you can enter a server location that will show instead of a mapped physical location.
– If you have gone through the process of entering the correct and most appropriate details for your website, including contact details you want to share, then you will have to click ‘Finish’ and choose a way to verify your GMB through the contact details you have given.
– Once verified, your GMB will be live and fully accessible for you to finish optimising.
How to Access an Existing GMB?
Sometimes, as previously mentioned, Google will take it into their own hands to set up a GMB for active working businesses. This means sometimes you will need to update or change the information or content entirely.
Getting access to this can often be challenging and take some time. So, I have broken down the steps to help you access any existing GMB managed by Google or someone else.
If it is owned by Google you can start the process as if you were setting up a new GMB. When typing in your business name a list should appear and you simply click on this and follow the verification process.
However, if your GMB is owned by someone else then you will have to request access into the GMB again through the same process of finding your business in GMB. Then to verify yourself you will have to send a request that will be delivered to the email address that owns the listing.
Sometimes this could be an old email address that you no longer have access to. But again you have to go through the same process and an email about the request will head to the email address associated with the GMB listing. Google then has an automatic system where if the request is not accepted or declined in 7 days it will automatically be accepted and you will be able to access the account.
